About Utiq

What is Utiq?

Utiq is an advertising tracker built by four telecom giants (Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, Vodafone) that turns your carrier into a tracker: your mobile or fixed connection — your number, your subscription — becomes an advertising ID that follows you from site to site, browser to browser and device to device.

Launched in 2023, Utiq presents itself as an “authentic” consent service for telecom-operated advertising tracking. In practice, your carrier becomes the link between your subscriber identity and your browsing, exactly where ad networks were losing visibility with the end of third-party cookies.

Why is it a problem?

Tracking happens at the network level, independent of the browser or device, and survives clearing cookies or private browsing. It relies on consent, but that consent is often requested through ambiguous banners, sometimes as “consent or pay”.

Methodology

The index cross-references public signals: DNS records pointing to Utiq infrastructure (*.utiq-aws.net), TLS certificates for utiq.<site> subdomains (Certificate Transparency logs), and a check that the Utiq loader responds on the domain. To date, 542 sites are listed, including 143 in France. The “Utiq since” date is estimated from the earliest known public trace.
